Expendables 3

expendables-3

I am not a fan of war-type gun-fights but decided to watch this movie just to see if by some miracle I could identify an underlying message of truth for this era. Lo and behold, there it is: bridging the generation gap.

This movie managed to bring together almost all the past action heroes that we know and love, with lots of action and humor. The underlying theme, however, is incorporating a group of young people for the mission at hand. Apparently, a lot of the older guys have died, and one is dying, so the broken leader decides to ditch his old team for a young, energetic, more technologically inclined bunch. You can almost predict what happens next. The plot involves both working together for ultimate victory.

We see this divide in all levels of society where the young and the old are seemingly incompatible. The old will tell the young that their days were better, and they need to adapt. The young believes that they are superior because they have a better grasp of modern technology, and access to just about all the knowledge in the world. Did you notice that the children born today are already wired to adapt to technology? The old are not wired to adapt to the newer reality, and neither are the young capable of surrendering what comes naturally to them to embrace the old school. The reality is, both need each other to survive the times and seasons common to us all.

While the conflict persists between the incoming and outgoing generations, I believe bridging the gap will take an effort from both parties. I have learned a lot in my life so far. Many of the experiences I walk into are new to me but commonto many. There are people who have walked through what you are going through right now, who can offer counsel and help that will alleviate fear and anxiety. Have you ever stopped to wonder why the issue of anxiety has escalated to such alarming proportions in the last ten years? There has been a decline in wisdom and truth passing from generation to generation. Because of the rapid advance in technology, medicine and knowledge, and also the associated corruption from those who want to cash in on the money cows, the younger generation believes they have a handle on the issues they face, and often rush to whatever available solutions promoted by the media. They don’t know the wisdom of approaching solutions from a place of rest and contemplation and often end up making matters worse instead of better. This is something we can definitely learn from the older generation who were not so quick to address problems with chemicals and radioactive technology.

For the generation gap to be bridged, both sides need to understand that they have something of value to contribute to the other generation. We must first identify that none is more superior to the other, and both have its place. Ultimate victory for humanity rest in working together and not apart.

On a side note, I do miss the old action movies where one man can take on a whole army and walk away without a scratch.
